Is LAT compatible with Christian beliefs?
Much has been said and written about the Law of Attraction (LAT). The basic premise of this Law is that if you want something badly enough and send out the right signals, the universe delivers. What you wish for, you get!
How does this belief stack up against Christian beliefs? Mainstream Christians believe that God provides and is in control of what happens in the world and in the larger universe. More fundamentalist Christians go further and believe that everything that happens to them is God’s will. There is nothing they can do to change their fate.
I think the TRUTH lies somewhere in the middle. I believe GOD does provide, puts possibilities in our paths and paves the way for us to live positive, happy lives.
But there are also certain “natural” laws at work. These include traditional disciplines like psychology, chemistry, metaphysics, and modern inter-disciplinary like psycho-kinesis.
As a Christian, how far would I go in subscribing to the LAT? If I’m alone in the desert dying of thirst and wish for a bottle of Coke, I’m not sure if a bottle of Coke is going to materialise for me out of thin air. I would appeal directly to God. If God chooses to work a miracle, that would be a “supernatural” law rather than “natural”
I think the LAT works more in the interpersonal and metaphysical realm.
An example working in the interpersonal realm: I notice that when I am nice to people, generally people are nice back to me. If I am flippant and rude, people react negatively back to me. Whatever kind of person I am, I receive the same treatment from others.
An example working in the realm of metaphysics: If I want to get rich, I will attune myself to that frequency so that all my thoughts, actions and attitude will tend towards that direction. I will prioritise my time to activities that give me the opportunity to make that extra buck. I will want to upgrade my knowledge and network with people who are useful to me. I will cut down on activities that waste my time and are unproductive. At the end of the day, all my thoughts, efforts and energies I put towards this goal will come together in a powerful way. I may not become as rich as Bill Gates – but I will certainly find myself richer than when I first started out.
I would not dismiss Law of Attraction as new age mumbo-jumbo. There are scientific basis and natural laws built into its principles. And these are created by God. My conclusion is that Law of Attraction taught in an authentic and responsible way, need not – and should not – come in conflict with the teachings of Christianity.
